Does this make me a Poet?

Post by minks »

Godiva Girl wrote: A couple of months back I had written this poem and submitted it to a poetry contest. Now I do not think my poetry is very good at all, I submitted the poem for the hell of it and did not think about it again. Well, it got a letter in the mail telling me that not only has my poem been selected as a finalist in a poetry contest, but that it is going to be published in a book by the International Library of Poetry. I never expected this at all and I am completely surprised. What makes someone a poet? Wouldn't someone have to write a certain amount of poetry? Or does having your poem being published by such an honorary committee qualify you to call yourself a poet?

Congratulations, I had a similar occurance way back in my teens and was thrilled to have my poem published.

Be proud of your accomplishment and know that if ya didn't like it or didn't think it had potential you would never have entered the contest.

Horray for our new poet in residence.

Same thing happened to me.. But be PROUD of yourself..That whole Poetry.Com thing is a BUNCh of CRAP..:( My daughter was heart broken after she realized her poem was not in the book either..:(

Be proud of your work girl..It takes a lot of "mind power" to think of great things like that!

My husband and daughter received the same letter. How do they get away with scamming so many people?

Dang, Kid. I am sorry. But you should definately be proud of everything you have written. Frost never thought of himself as a poet either.

But you have deffinately peaked my curiosity. Ithink everyone would like to read you works.

Certainly be pleased or proud for any work you have ever written (unless you yourself know it`s not as good as you`d like). So sorry you fell for that sort of scam. Here in England, they not only had the scam but they even got little kids to ask their parents to buy the books - now which parent is going to refuse if they think their child`s poem is in a proper anthology? That trick is really despicable!
