I am in one of those strange moods and this sad though came into my mind , you are a member of a nice forum FG for example and you fall off your perch :( and no one knows anything about it , all that happens some one posts " have not seen so and so for a while " unless you are known personally by another member you just disappear into cyberspace , :-1

I see what you are saying Unc, we all have a special friendship that you would only expect in a physical friendship (can't think what to call a none on-line friendship). With a non-online friendship if your friend disappeared you are able to try and find them or find out what happened to them, and possibly help them. Here if they disappear you are powerless - however strongly you felt for that person.

I guess we cannot change this - even though it hurts. I quote 'better to have loved and lost than never loved'. I think the joy, fun and friendship we get here is worth the risk. :-6 :-4 :-4

I think online friendships require diligence to turn into anything significant. It's the same way with real life friendships. I've left this forum before for a time period with no announcement of my leaving and no checking back to see if anyone asked where I was. Regardless, a few people kept in touch with me and, eventually, one of them talked me into coming back at which point a thread was started about my my return but I didn't know it until months after the thread had been sent to the dirt pile. Yep. That kind of thread.

Having said that, I've been here since the early days of the forum and invested a lot of energy for better or worse. The better and worse seem to alternate depending on the current climate. You will be amazed how much your persona evolves over time. If you invest the time.

It is your persona, not you. No one online will ever really know who you are unless they go further and invest the energy to meet you.

In real life, I've spent a year or more developing close friendships that I've walked away from and not looked back. Sometimes for a very good reason and sometimes because we grew in different directions. I've also gone for many years not speaking to close friends who are still close friends. We always meet up again and I find it fascinating to see how much we have both changed, but our fondness for each other remains.

There isn't a hell of a lot of difference between what is required to maintain online friendships and real life comparisons. I've also known a number of people who might have thought they knew a fair bit about me but really just knew a persona. If you meet one person in real life or online who actually understands what you are about then count yourself lucky. If you have more that one person who really understands you multiply how lucky you are.

Then don't worry about it.

I agree with Pinky. I have me a couple of people in RL (not from here) and found them nice, but to be honest did not consider them any more or less "friends" than folks I have not met.

Like Pinky, I do have a couple of people set up to let the garden know if something were to happen to me....as with Cheshire Cat and when BR had her crash.

I missed the bit about this being about dying somehow.

In that case, I think you've got bigger problems than disappearing from cyberspace. :wah:

sorry, that did strike me as funny.

yes that is sad isn't it.

I am fortunate to have my daughter keeping in touch with Angeleyes and between the 2 of them, word would get out if anything happened to me.

I dunno Uncle Fes, I would suggest if you have any kind of family or friend support system, be sure to include FG's website as a "please contact" listing. Folks do not need to sign into your profile they could just come on and let others know what has gone on.
