Bloody hell, talk about big brother !!

Post by buttercup »

Ive been toying with the idea of building a website & going totally self employed for a while but never really done anything much about it due to various non self employment work commitments. Anyway now that im stuck at home for 6 weeks i thought i'd get a bit of work done on the website before launch if i ever do get round to launching it. This morning i recieve an e-mail from inland revenue at the e-mail i set up for this site, i only just set it up :eek:

Note: After the last annual calculations of your fiscal activity we have determined that you are eligible to receive a tax refund of £140

Step one Make sure you have the following information to hand:

* your Unique Taxpayer Reference (UTR) number (printed at the top of your tax return)

* either your postcode or National Insurance (NI) number

* credit card

Step two

Go to the HMRC website, by clicking here, then submit the tax refund request and allow us 6-9 days in order to process it.

A refund can be delayed for a variety of reasons. For example submitting invalid records or applying after the deadline.

Is it safe to file online?

Filing an online tax return is secure and convenient. Any sensitive or private information you file online with HMRC is encrypted and protected. It is important that you never share your "pin" with anyone. HMRC will never ask you for your "pin" by telephone or email.

For goodness sake, it's a phishing scam. The IR might get that efficient in a hundred years from now but it's nowhere near it yet!

If you go to the email and View Source (or View Full Headers) and copy/paste ALL of it into this thread, we'll tell you more. How's that. Blank your own email address from it with XXXXX.

Have a look at http://www.telegraph.co.uk/money/main.j ... raud30.xml for an example.A spokesman for HMRC said: "We are aware of the scam and are looking into it. As far as we are aware, no one has been fooled yet."They must be kidding, or stupid.

People do respond to these. Strange but true.
