Minks, you bring up a great point. Sort of, pick your battles type

thing, I bet. And in that case I would choose the make-up over the

drugs, too.

I remember wanting to wear my hair parted in the middle, and it was

absolutely not allowed. So I just took it out and wore it the way I

wanted at school and then put it back before I got home... I even

tried to compromise with my mom, I told her I would wear it the way

she wanted when someone was around that she cared about and my

way at school... but it was a no go.

Moms and daughters is awfully tough for an awfully long time, I think.

Oh I don't think that at all, I'm really enjoying reading everyone's thoughts

on this.

CheshireCat wrote: Exactly! All it took for me was a stern look from my father and I knew to cool it. It seems that the kids are in control of the families these days. You see it all the time, in stores. The kid is screaming it's head off and the mother is pleading with them to behave. Never would've happened in my family. My mother would jerk me right out of that store and set me straight in a heart beat! i think parents must fear the whole abuse allegation.

So true

When my oldest was about 3 we were in a super market, she was running down the isle, her dad was chasing her and racing her and they were laughing like looney tunes, and in all her innocence she squealed....loudly "Don't beat me daddy" And the poor man frooze, I frooze and my daughter laughed like mad cause she won their little race. I will never ever forget how we felt...I don't even recall if anyone came round to check on us or what, we just froze in our steps

I remember one day the old record player stopped working. I ofered to have a look, but my Dad said no.

One Saturday, both my parents went shopping leaving trusty ol' me alone at home. So, I fixed the record player, played my records, then, when it was time for them to come home, I put the fault back on the record player and put my records back away (my Dad would have had a fit if he'd found out I'd messed with the record player).

And as a parent I am always doing this...."is this really that bad, and the option could be worse" or "how badly does it affect our lives if I say yes"

But it does show how restrictive rules can have negative results. I couldn't speak to my Dad so, I told my Mum what I'd done and she even said to leave it. I could not establish respect for my Dad like that.

And as an aside to this whole thing, might I mention how wonderful it

is/was to see pics of a mother daughter trip? Especially the pic of a

mother's car with 2 bicycles on the back...

It really does ya good to see something like that.

Between PM ing and sorting today's paperwork and comforting myself over unloving flies, I haven't had a chance to look for them, not that I knew they were there in the first place.

I could understand someone hanging themselves if they were ALLOWED to watch Big Brother

I know. It was happy hopping onto my finger but it didn't want to be kissed. I guess it was a bit too far, even after 8 years. I think it's gone to explain to its partner in the kitch.

minks wrote: Good point, indeed and often we are quick to jump on the parents for not being in tune with their kids, it's a fine line.... be the kids friend, be the kids mentor

some kids just can't go to their parents and say what is on their mind, how they hurt, who is hurting them, what is hurting them, confusing them, stressing them, so as a parent how do you take responsibility.

I would be the first to blame society... we as a whole stress our kids out way to much forcing adult issues down their throats WAY TO EARLY. This 11 year old died not because dicipline or a TV show, likely she commited suicide thinking it was her call for help and didn't realize the end was truly the end.

She may well *not* have intended to commit suicide. There's been an inquest,

and all that goes with it, and no untoward comments or insinuations were

reported. No drugs, nothing. Accidents happen, and it looks to me as though

this was a play-act that simply went wrong.

I just want to clear up a few things- the mother was not the one that went round into the garden, it was the mothers long term partner, and he did not see her and think 'oh shes ignoring me' as soon as she was seen the ambulance was called. and there is nothing more to add to the story...what was said in 'The Argus' is what happened...she got a strop on, which was often the case' and it is thought she was trying for attention...

how do I know this...because I know the family, and I knew Yasmin...there isn't anything strange or odd about the family...it was just an event has sadly happened.

Well here goes my first post. I am a retired Firefighter Paramedic and have been witness to many suicides over the years. After talking with many friends and family of those who did harm to themselves it is my opinion that these folks usually have some sort of mental illness or many other events gang up on them to cause the act. In other words the girl not being able to watch her TV show was the straw that broke the camels back so to speak.
