Thanks, Butter.
I think most people don't want to offend others but just aren't aware of the preferable words to use. I recall asking Bryn once if I should say British or English....and since I just got up I can't remember which one he preferred (doh!) I think these discussions are a good thing to have...they open eyes for people like me who aren't that culturally aware.

I've never been offended by it, but I really don't consider myself a yank. If you want to call me a yank go right ahead or even a yankee doodle dandy.

Butter, a question for you?
What is the difference between Scotch and Scottish?
I am thinking it's like Asian vs, Oriental. We say Asian when talking about the people and Oriental when talking about objects like rugs or furniture. We're not supposed to say "oriental people" anymore.
Is that how it is with Scottish and Scotch?

Isn't Yanquis a Spanish version of Yankee? So now were all Latin Yanquis?

yanqui is the spanish word for yankee but if used towards an American it would be meant in an offensive way.
um, as for the rest of it, I dunno...I would assume no matter what the situatuations are between places not everyone is going to be 100 % happy with everyone else.

First off Spot, they feel we took some land away from them, and I think that is where Yanqui comes form, I've only noticed a derisive tone in the word Yanqui from mexicans. Maybe thats why the British call us Yanks also. We yanked this land away from you and we yanked some Mexican land.:wah:

Out here they own a great deal of the land. And even part of the river, which they charge non-Indians to use. I haven't been in the river since I was 22 because I will not pay the tribe for what God gave all of us. I'd like to know who had the land before they did. There's always someone to have come before. And can we talk about litter? Our tribe is notorious for leaving trash around. Plastic bags, food wrappers, beer bottles. Just chuck it out the window as you go by. I've seen too much negativity to continue to buy into that stewards of the land bit. I think that left with Iron Eyes Cody.

I love this song & the childrens choir who sing it.
This is what we Aussies are.
Some of you may have heard it on TV as an add for QANTAS Airlines.
I am / We are - Australian
[1]
I came from the dreamtime from the dusty red soil plains
I am the ancient heart, the keeper of the flame
I stood upon the rocky shore
I watched the tall ships come
For forty thousand years I'd been the first Australian.
[2]
I came upon the prison ship bowed down by iron chains.
I cleared the land, endured the lash and waited for the rains.
I'm a settler.
I'm a farmer's wife on a dry and barren run
A convict then a free man I became Australian.
[3]
I'm the daughter of a digger who sought the mother lode
The girl became a woman on the long and dusty road
I'm a child of the depression
I saw the good times come
I'm a bushy, I'm a battler
I am Australian
[chorus]
We are one, but we are many
And from all the lands on earth we come
We share a dream and sing with one voice:
I am, you are, we are Australian
I am, you are, we are Australian.
[4]
I'm a teller of stories
I'm a singer of songs
I am Albert Namatjira
I paint the ghostly gums
I am Clancy on his horse
I'm Ned Kelly on the run
I'm the one who waltzed Matilda
I am Australian
[5]
I'm the hot wind from the desert
I'm the black soil of the plains
I'm the mountains and the valleys
I'm the drought and flooding rains
I am the rock, I am the sky
The rivers when they run
The spirit of this great land
I am Australian
[chorus]
We are one, but we are many
And from all the lands on earth we come
We share a dream and sing with one voice:
I am, you are, we are Australian

And from all the lands on earth we come
We share a dream and sing with one voice:
I am, you are, we are Australian
I am, you are, we are Australian.
