Learn how to use a gun....mace?

I am trying not to be negative, but from a person that lives near Washington DC and has only been to NYC twice in my life and ONLY during the day...

I would be as prepared as possible. LOTS of Money, job and apartment lined up are good starters. Not to mention to make sure where you are going to be living in relation to your job/shopping and transportation for all of it.

Do I sound like a Mom???

Hi Darren,

My best advice for you is to save up and take a holiday in NY. Walk around the city and see how people really live and work there. I know how much you want to live in NY, but you've never been there. You might hate it and have burnt all your bridges back home.

When I was your age I wanted to live in Ireland. But, after visiting every year in all seasons I realized that I wouldn't be happy there. I'd miss home and the weather was always cold, damp, rainy and windy. I still visit Ireland often as part of my close family and friends live there, but there's no place like home.

Maybe one day I would like to live in Florida. That's why I'm researching it now....looking at all the different areas and spending time there to see if I would really like to live there. I just spent 5 weeks there this summer to scope out areas.

Of course, you shouldn't give up your dreams, but NY is outrageously expensive and housing is hard to find, sometimes impossible. You'd probably end up living in one of the suburbs of NY.

Think about it carefully.

Hey Jim,

Good to see ya. No, I didn't find the food in Ireland or the UK terrible. I thought it was quite good. My relatives cook simply with lots of homemade goodies. Everything I've eaten in Ireland has been fresh, tasty and comforting. When I wanted gourmet foods I went to upscale restaurants.

I think visiting would be a great idea first, before taking the plunge....to me it's just a BIG scarey expensive city...but I know that MANY people love it there, and don't want to be a gloomy gus...so unlike me...ha ha ha....

Geeze Jim,

That's a tough question. How much money you would need in NY would depend on your life style. It is absolutely possible to visit NY on a budget. You would have to research the net for good buys. If you type in NY on a budget, you'll find tons of places to sleep, eat and drink. Airline prices also depend on seasons. If Darren came with a mate they could share expenses.

It's almost impossible to stay in one of my favorite hotels during Christmas and holidays. Unless you book a year ahead of time, they're booked.

I LOVE New York!!! One of my favourite cities. My youngest daughter at about age 16 had one aim only - to go there, any way she could, as soon as she could. Her older sister had run off to Europe the previous year, so she had her head full of exotic tales too. New York is a BIG CITY - and my youngest daughter had at that stage grown up pretty much in a country town. New York is pounding with energy and can eat newbies for breakfast. You need a plan and back up, experience and prospects.

In the end, I decided to turn R's dream into a reality. I took her to New York in the long holidays in the middle of her final College year. She was 17. She LOVED New York, but she is a bright cookie, and realised that she wasn't quite ready to make it on her own there. She finished her schooling and got her media qualifications, moved first to Sydney to work in television, then on to London. In December she's relocating to Paris. The headquarters of MTV are in New York, so who knows... she's 23 now, and if she does go there, she will be ready. (And I hope she has a spare room for me.. otherwise Kathy, I'm commuting from NJ, okay?)

Maybe the first stage before jumping in with 2 feet and moving to NY would be to live on your own in your home town for a trial period to see if you can cope with your support system around you?

If you're low on cash, you can buy a case of Ramen Noodles for about $6.

Buy stuff at the "dollar stores," it's a lot cheaper. Like toiletries and detergent.

They make books for this sort of thing; I'm going to go hunt some down for you. Will be back with what I find.

Like the Rough Guide to New York City?

A very good suggestion.

Definitely try before you buy - jump in with both feet at your own peril :-)

I have 3 brothers that are now living in the States, entry to the country is very hard unless visiting. My brother that went to New York 2 years ago, had to have a job, be able to support himself, have savings (thousands) and have a extensive medical. America have got it so right, I wish our immigration system was as strict.

Darren a few nights alone while your Mum was in hospital is totally different to going to a different country, as i'm sure you know.

It is so good to have ambition and dreams, but I think Pam gave an excellent reply, you need to finish college, get a job and gain experience, live alone paying your own way, by the time you have done all of this, you will hopefully ready to head to the big apple.:-6

Party pooper !

Whats the worst that could happen ?

I mean aside from getting scooped up by the Jamaican Young White Persons Sex Slave Org. (JYWPSSO) and being sold to old white men who have their way with him and his only pay is a ham sandwich at the end of the day ?

Besides that ?

The Gardens Gnomad is not far off.

NYC is rough.

It's beautiful and alive. Truly The City That Never Sleeps.

But I've seen some scary things there. From personally being mugged to a bloody Mafia assassination.

If you're serious about the move without the visit, ML, try Hoboken, New Jersey. It's a nice little artsy college town right on the Hudson River. You can ferry over to The City any time without all the Street Hassle.

my husband moved here when he was 22. His first stop was NYC and he stayed in a hostel for 2 weeks. You could look into hostels in NYC, it would save you money at first and give you a safe place to stay while you have a chance to find a more permanent place. :)

I'm not sure about work permits and all that, why don't you call the US Embassy there and find out what you can do? I think they can answer questions online, too.

Best wishes! :-6

Yeah! A hostel would be a good idea Darren! You'd have a "fall back" place to come home to and people to associate with while you learned the ropes.:)

I'm not sure about work permits and all that, why don't you call the US Embassy there and find out what you can do? I think they can answer questions online, too.

Best wishes! :-6

I never thought about Hostles thanks for that Sunny and sorry for being Nosey but how long did your Husband stay in a Hostel before he got his own place?
"Why not just tell people I'm an alien from Mars. Tell them I eat live chickens and do a voodoo dance at midnight. They'll believe anything you say, because you're a reporter. But if I, Michael Jackson, were to say, 'I'm an alien from Mars and I eat live chickens and do a voodoo dance at midnight', people would say, 'Oh, man, that Michael Jackson is nuts. He's cracked up. You can't believe a damn word that comes out of his mouth.' " Michael Jackson

he only spent 2 weeks in NY. He spent about 3-4 months traveling the US and staying in hostels in every place until we met in Chicago. :)

that'd be the daily price, they should all be somewhere in the 20-30 dollar range. :)
