I guess we all do it, but it does present a bit of a problem and can be responsible for some of the nasty posts that some get involved in. I see questions being raised that had already been answered in preceding posts of the same thread. I see explanations being completely ignored. I see responses that have no relationship to the initial post. Good communication should be important to all of us, be it face to face in the non cyber world, or online posting. In an attempt at better communication for all of us, I humbly suggest that we take the time to read the initial post and those that follow.

Good communication is key to effective interaction on any level.

Sadly, I take so long to reply to most posts that half a dozen people can have answered before my post's ready to send.

I'll occasionally fire off a reply to a post before I've reached the end of a thread if I feel that a point needs making as a personal statement whether or not someone else has done so but be sure I'll have read what was there to read.

Good point, I spose it all depends on who replies some of us are just here for fun conversation, while others seek the more serious nature of communication. Absolutely our posts get derailed often, I think that is up to the initiater (spelling sorry) of the post to get it back on track if they are looking for seriousness as opposed to the fun light hearted convo many of us indulge in. For me it's a matter of nobody takes me serious so I post silliness.

Even silliness, humor and light hearted conversation gets mis understood.

oh you got that right, I think it's because some people get over sensative or misread the lack of emotion. Seems emotion plays a key in how things are interpreted. And heck some people just plain like controversy when it comes to some posting styles.

There are a few techniques for improving communication. The most effective one I've tried is repeating back to someone what you think they said before criticising or responding to it. Many times that clears up misunderstandings right away.

Are you saying then, that it is the reader of the post that's at fault if the post is not understood, and not the poster?

I have questioned this of myself as you know Lon. What i think is pretty easy to understand in my posts has been taken many different ways, sometimes i have found it frustrating but by n large ive come to accept its just part of forum life.

I think too the longer we are in one forum the easier it is to interpret ones style. I know I will read some posts and think OMG this person is just itching for a battle so I have to go back and re-read and realize no they just have a different way of stating things. It's both poster style, and readers interpretation that come into play.

If a post is taken in many different ways by many different people, wouldn't you think that perhaps the poster has not communicated very well?

I would also tend to agree with that statement Lon & yet have been surprised at how many ways something which seems so obvious can be taken.

Some members will get it, some wont.
